Villa haven’t done too badly under the referee, considered to be the most calamitous on the circuit, probably because it is an issue of competence rather than bias.


Winning half the games he’s officiated, being carded marginally less than the opposition and being awarded five penalties to the opponents’ two.


But the last two fixtures have been defeats, albeit to Liverpool at Anfield and against Villa’s nemeses Palace, so too much can be read into that. Attwell has refereed Villa on three occasions at Stamford Bridge and seems to be the Premier League's go-to man for the fixture which has certainly been to Chelsea's benefit so far:
